Mercedes-Benz’s S500 Intelligent Drive prototype

Mercedes-Benz S500 Intelligent Drive Prototype

Mercedes-Benz has recently revealed information about a new research vehicle prototype – S500 Intelligent Drive. The S-class Intelligent Drive is essentially a self-driving automobile that operates via sensors and accurate mapping, scanning the road around it for obstacles while working to the maps. Systems include a stereo camera, two long-range radars, four short-range radars, a color camera to read traffic lights and a rear-facing camera that cameras the view with the mapping, to ensure the car is locating its position accurately. With its four short-range radar systems and three long-range radar systems, the car will use the data from the sensors and global positioning system to determine its location, the location of obstacles and the available free area for driving.

Mercedes has been testing the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Intelligent Drive since early 2012. While in development, specially trained drivers were required to intervene to avoid potential hazards, which Mercedes recorded and then modified their system to make sure that the car was better equipped to handle them automatically in the future.

According to Mercedes, there are three obstacles to the car reaching production now. These include the need for even more computing power to enable even greater data processing, optimized mapping that is entirely reliable and a need for laws to adapt. Mercedes expects to release the first self-driving vehicle this decade, and they already working with the German authorities to adapt regulations to allow it.

So far, three types of autonomous driving have been identified, around which to develop regulations: partially autonomous where the driver must constantly monitor the road, highly automated, where the driver can engage in some non-driving activities, and fully autonomous, where the driver need not monitor the road.

Although self-driving cars may not be available for a few more years, you can visit Mercedes-Benz of Tucson to stay current.
