2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class named Motor Trend’s 2013 Sport/Utility of the Year®

2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-class

Perhaps unsurprisingly to owners of the stellar sport-utility GL-Class in Tucson, Motor Trend has named the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class the SUV of the Year.

Hearkening back to the infancy of the sport-utility class, Motor Trend Technical Director Frank Markus summarized the GL-Class as simply “[doing] more of what we expect an SUV to do.”  The GL-Class surpassed its opponents largely due to its superior mechanical performance – in a world of crossovers, Mercedes-Benz still knows how to keep the “utility” in sport-utility vehicle.

The GL-Class includes several engine options:  a turbodiesel V-6 reaches 26 highway miles per gallon fuel efficiency, while two larger twin-turbo V-8 options roar up to 362 and 429 horsepower, respectively.  The GL550 – the largest of the three trims – rolls from 0-60 miles per hour in a shocking 5.1 seconds (visit your local Mercedes-Benz dealer and drive one yourself to see how a 7-seater can put many sports coupes to shame).

Of course, Mercedes-Benz is known for luxury, and the GL-Class is more “rule” than “exception” in that regard.  The GL-Class’ 360-degree cameras impressed Motor Trend reviewers, as did the “Bentley-grade white [designo®] interior,” which practically oozes opulence.

Although many brands now compete in the SUV market, including Ford, Audi, Subaru, Infiniti, Nissan, and others, Motor Trend‘s reviewers admitted that, early on, the title of SUV of the Year was the GL-Class’ to lose.  Scott Mortara said of the GL-Class:  “An absolutely amazing piece of machinery.  […]  There is nothing more you could want or need in an SUV.”

Quipped Editor-in-Chief Edward Loh:  “Imagine a gigantic Swiss Army knife, with 50-some tools (one of the tools is a Leatherman, which itself has 50 tools).  Now imagine all the blades are gold-plated platinum, and the inlaid mother-of-pearl handle is wrapped in leather from a Himalayan bald eagle.  That’s basically the GL-Class.”

All that is left to say of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class SUV is this:  hurry to Mercedes-Benz of Tucson to see the pride of the Mercedes-Benz fleet in person.
